CHAPTER SEVEN

I went inside and made myself a chicken salad sandwich. Nacho came in too, and I found some tuna for her. That seemed to make it official: I was her new best friend. Her nose disappeared into the bowl of tuna before I could even set it down. Then once the food was gone, she licked the dish and settled down for still another nap.

While I ate my sandwich, I picked up my phone and pulled up the website for Antiquities and Wonders. I found the spoon right away in a section at the top called “Some of Our Favorite Things.” I clicked on the picture and just about choked on my bite of sandwich. I could not believe my eyes. More than four hundred dollars for a single spoon! Who in the world would pay that and, more importantly, who would have left it in my yard? I knew that Bill and Rick and Frances all had been there and would have had the chance to drop it, but none of them were wealthy. I imagined they would buy any spoons they needed at Values Galore, where I liked to shop. In fact, I would love to hear one of the sales staff recommend to Frances that she buy a spoon for four-hundred-plus. Her reaction would be priceless!

Once my meal was finished, I prepared my house for a cat. I found a litter box and toys left over from the time I watched a cat for one of the ticket sellers at the Yellow House. Then I glanced down at Nacho, curled up in an orange ball, and decided that a nap seemed like a nice idea. So I stretched out on the couch with my favorite purple blanket.

Forty minutes later, I woke up with a sweet tooth and decided I would head to Doughnut Delights and More, where hopefully the “more” would be a clue about Bill’s trip to the park. I scratched behind Nacho’s ears, careful not to wake her. “Be back a little later,” I whispered to the cat, “and maybe I’ll bring treats.”
